Mulch is a great way to accent your landscape, helps plants grow better, and acts as a weed barrier by preventing weeds from breaking through the soil. Mulch also prevents soil compaction, helps maintain a balanced soil temperature, and helps the soil retain moisture.
To calculate the amount of mulch needed for a specific area, use the following formula to convert the size of your area in feet to cubic yards (how bulk mulch is measured and delivered):
Length x Width x Depth of application (2-4 inches deep of mulch) divided by 27 = Cubic Yards of mulch needed.
For example, a 60' x 3' row of shrubs with a 2" layer of mulch converts as follows: 60' x 3' x .167' / 27 = 1.1 cubic yards.
